8% Provincial Rebate

Effective January 1, 2017, the Government of Ontario is reducing electricity costs for families, farms and small businesses by providing a rebate equal to the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (8%) on electricity bills. Customers will start to see this rebate on their bills for electricity consumed on or after January 1, 2017.

Residences, Farms and Small Businesses

To be eligible to receive the 8% Provincial Rebate on your electricity bill, you must qualify under at least ONE of the following criteria:

  • Annual demand for electricity of 50 kilowatts or less;
  • Annual consumption of 250,000 kilowatt hours of electricity or less;
  • You carry on a business that is a farming business for the purposes of the Farm Registration and Farm Organizations Funding Act, 1993, and you hold a valid registration number assigned under that Act or your obligation to file a farming business registration form was waived pursuant to an order made under subsection 22 (6) of that Act;
  • Your account relates to one of the following:
  1. a dwelling,
  2. a property, within the meaning of the Condominium Act, 1998,
  3. a residential complex, within the meaning of subsection 2 (1) of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, without regard to section 5 of that Act, or
  4. a property that includes one or more housing units and that is owned or leased by a co-operative within the meaning of the Co-operative Corporations Act

Residential Properties and Complexes

Customers with eligible residential properties or complexes as defined in the Condominium Act, 1998 or the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 may also be eligible. If you have previously provided us with a self-declaration form for exemption from the Debt Retirement Charge (DRC) or to receive the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit (OCEB), you will automatically be enrolled to receive the Provincial Rebate. Under the eligibility criteria provided in the Ontario Rebate for Electricity Consumers Act, 2016, you may be eligible to receive the 8% rebate on your bill even if you did not previously qualify for the DRC exemption or the OCEB.

Please review the self-declaration for the 8% Provincial Rebate form to determine if you are eligible.

Please note that if you are a residential customer or a general service customer with an annual demand for electricity of 50 kilowatts or less you will automatically receive the 8% Provincial Rebate. There is no need to complete the 8% Provincial Rebate form.
