New Oakville Community Integrated Energy System

What is IES?

An Integrated Energy System is a sustainable energy development system that combines the production of heat and electrical power (Combined Heat and Power or “CHP”) to meet the steam, heating, cooling and electrical energy requirements of large commercial, industrial, or institutional developments.

Oakville Hydro – Project Lead

Oakville Hydro is leading the development of a number of potential institutional and commercial district energy projects.  As a public-sector corporation, Oakville Hydro is uniquely qualified to finance and develop district energy projects and provide related energy services.

Benefits of a New Oakville Community IES System

Greater Energy Efficiency

Some of the New Oakville Community IES’s will use natural gas and the CHP system to produce two types of energy:

A CHP system is capable of running at approximately 85 per cent efficiency as compared to 30-to-60 per cent efficiency for traditional energy plants.

Environmental Sustainability

By using less fuel and producing lower emissions than traditional centralized gas and coal fuelled power plants, a new Oakville Community IES can dramatically reduce fossil fuel use and the release of associated air pollutants.

Secure, Reliable Energy

New Oakville Community IES’s will allow businesses to remain fully operational in the event of an extended power system blackout.  This is because the natural gas distribution system supplying the IES is independent of the municipal or provincial power grids. IES plants are proven to achieve 99.9% reliability.
