About the Program
Oakville Hydro Corporation, with support from the Ontario Power Authority, is making it simple for
Ontarians to do their part to conserve energy and ease the strain on the electricity
system during summer peak demand times. By mid-summer Ontarians will be able to
sign up for the peaksaver program through a participating utility and help reduce the
strain on the power grid during peak demand and decrease electricity costs by
diminishing the need to purchase costly peak-hour electricity. This program is being
offered to utility customers in regions of Ontario where electricity use is higher in summer
than winter.
The peaksaver program assists qualified Oakville Hydro Corporation] customers to install a device in
their home that allows Oakville Hydro Corporation to briefly control their central air conditioning
system during ‘critical’ peak use times – typically weekday afternoons during the hottest
days of the summer, but never on holidays or weekends. In 2006, the system was
activated twice.
Oakville Hydro Corporation customers who are single-family homeowners with central air
conditioning qualify to participate in the program and only need to call to schedule an appointment with a certified technician who will install the system. For further information please contact the
1-866-514-6778.
Incentives and benefits
By decreasing use during critical peak demand, Ontarians stand to reduce the use of
coal-fired generating stations diminishing smog and air pollution and the instances of
purchasing expensive emergency electricity from other jurisdictions. As an added
incentive, program participants will receive a $25 incentive payment for signing up.
